The gorillas of Rwanda are one of the world’s greatest conservation success stories. They are the only primate species on Earth with increasing numbers, and Rwanda has built a thriving industry around gorilla encounters.
Exhilarating and eye-opening, many people find themselves deeply moved by a rare encounter with a gorilla in the wild. While the desire to come face-to-face with a mighty mountain gorilla may understandably lure most adventurers to the Virungas, Volcanoes National Park is also home to rare forest elephants, giant forest hogs, buffalo, black-fronted duiker, spotted hyenas, bushbucks, and several varieties of small predators. The park is also a bird-watching hotspot with more than 170 recorded bird species.
